Why we built this
The exam that decides everything deserves a tool built for it.
Since 2025, one short conversation — Norskprøven muntlig — is the only language requirement left for permanent residence (A2) and citizenship (B1). It's oral, it's high-pressure, and for a lot of people it's the last thing standing between them and a life here. So why does almost nothing actually practise that?
Two ways people prepare today
Both are fine choices. Neither is built for the thing that actually decides it.
Option one
General language apps
Duolingo, Babbel, and the rest
Good for — Genuinely good for building vocabulary from zero and keeping a daily habit.
The gap — But they teach Norwegian in general — not the oral exam — and with barely any real speaking. You can hold a 300-day streak and still freeze when an examiner asks you to describe a picture.
Option two
Language schools
10,000–25,000 kr, over months
Good for — A real teacher, structure, and months of solid grounding. Worth it for many people.
The gap — But they're expensive, slow to update their curriculum, and still teach the language broadly — not the exact exam. A few now bolt a clunky AI tutor onto an old course as an afterthought.
Right in the middle there's a gap: nothing built purely for the oral exam — its four tasks, its format, its pressure.
Where we fit
Alongside them — not instead of them.
Norskprøven.ai isn't here to replace your flashcards or your course. Use those to learn Norwegian. Use this to pass the exam. It's the speaking gym between lessons — and the focused final sprint in the weeks before your test date.
Only the exam
The four real tasks — about you, the picture, the conversation, the topic — in their real format and timing. Nothing you won't be asked.
The real worries
The freeze. The blank mind. The difficult partner. We drill the repair phrases and time-buyers that keep you talking when it counts.
Confidence, not perfection
The goal isn't a flawless accent. It's walking into that room sure you can handle whatever they ask you.
Built properly
A real AI product, not an add-on.
Built from the ground up on the best tools in AI — not a feature bolted onto something older. The native Oslo voices are ElevenLabs, the most convincing Norwegian voices available. When you record yourself, ElevenLabs Scribe turns your speech into text, and Anthropic's Claude judges whether you'd actually be understood under exam pressure.
“I'm not Norwegian. I'm going through this exact process myself — the same prøve, the same nerves about sitting across from an examiner. I built the tool I wished existed and couldn't find. If it helps you walk in a little more confident, it's doing its job.”
New, and getting better every week.
We'd rather put this in your hands now and improve it constantly — guided by people actually taking the exam — than polish it in private for a year. Tell us what would help, and you'll watch it change.
